Mexico’s foreign secretary to resign in bid for presidential candidacy

Mexico’s foreign secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced on Tuesday that he will resign from his position as he seeks to win the nomination of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party for next year’s presidential election.

Ebrard, 63, said that he will formally leave his position as head of Mexican diplomacy on Monday, June 12.

Lopez Obrador, who leads the Morena party, is limited to one term in office by Mexico’s constitution. As of now, Morena holds power or shares it with its allies in 22 of Mexico’s 32 states.

Ebrard will face competition from other politicians for the Morena nomination, including Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

Lately, Ebrard has been actively trying to show just how progressive he is, either by issuing Mexico’s first non-binary passport or by suggesting he is an advocate for migrants. So, it is quite obvious where his priorities lie.
